Johnson Lee :: Free Form 4

Free Form 4 - 2001

(download - 59:28 - 142.8mb 320kbps mp3)

This is part 4 of the infamous Free Form series by Johnson Lee.  It features 17 songs.  He starts out with a very nice selection of house tunes.  The first couple are on the jazzy tip.  It transitions to dubbier type house.  Midway through the mix it goes into broken beat house.  Around song 10, Johnson slows it down to a jazzy lounge downtempo vibe.  Overall it is quite a good listen and I'm happy I dug it out of the District Soul archives.

Avery :: To Tell The Truth

This edition of the bonus mixes brings us To Tell The Truth.  I recorded it in October of 2000.  It's a house mix with some jazz flavors.  The good news is there are several nice tracks to be heard on the mix.  The bad news is that I am without several of the track titles.  If anyone wants to chime in on tracks they know, please leave a comment.  Of the tracks I remember, the Soldiers of Twilight track is always a favorite of mine.  Colette - Try Her For Her Love on Moody Recordings was very popular back in 2000/2001.  Many commercially released mixes included this track.  Towards the end of the mix, I switched up to some deeper vocal tracks with Miguel Migs, Aquanote (Gabriel René), and Atlantis (aka Ron Trent).  I swear, back in the early 2000s, Miguel Migs and Naked Music Recordings seemed to have a new release every week.  At the time, I was working at Yoshitoshi Records in Georgetown as one of their in store DJs every Friday.  Without fail, when I arrived each an every Friday, I'd have a new stack of music from the Migs and Naked Music.  Needless to say, tons of copies sold.

Avery :: Winter Blues

This is a shorter mix I put together in December 2001.  There are a few tracks that were personal favorites at the time for me.  Love Letters by Alexander East simply jams!  I love the energy in the track that never seems to quit.  Back in 2001, LBS and I heard him play at Blue in Miami during the WMC and he did not disappoint.  And I Am by Greens Keepers and Stacy Kidd has a haunting touch to it that makes me move.  In case you didn't know, Stacy Kidd is the cousin to house legend Paul Johnson.  That's some serious talent in the family if I do say so myself.  Yet my all time favorite on this mix hands down has to be Smile by Jasper Street Company.  Even though this is on a local label, I didn't hear the dub version until I got a recording of Greg Norwood from Chicago (if you haven't heard of him, you owe it to yourself to check out his mixes).  There was a live mix he did back in 2001 that had that track and when I found myself in the endless head nod, I was on a mission to figure out what track it was.  Lo and behold, it was on a label from hometown heroes:  Basement Boys Records.  The mix wraps up with some lounge tracks.

Avery :: Abstractions 3

This is third volume of my Abstractions series.  I recorded it on 3 turntables on May 16, 2003 and combined lounge, downtempo, hip-hop, samba soul, afrobeat, and reggae/dub.  Then I intermingled some spoken word/comedy on top of it all.  The mix basically follows its title name and is in fact quite abstract in it's aggregate form but somehow it all works.  The mix starts off with a funny track from comedy legend Robin Williams.  The next several tracks are some underground hip-hop gems from the likes Peanut Butter Wolf, K-Otix, Latyrx, etc.  Around track 10, I change it up with some downtempo tracks starting off with one of my favorite groups of the 90s: Deee-Lite.  For any of you who are not familiar with them, please check out their "Dewdrops In The Garden" LP.  It's got to be one of my all time favs.  The Funki Porcini track is interesting as it plays with warping the tempo as to mimic the trip of Alice in Wonderland.  Later on I dive into some Brazilian flavor from Wanderléa and Clube Do Balanço.  The next step is into a little afrobeat and the mix finishes with some reggae/dub flavor including the stylings of Augustus Pablo.

Avery :: DC Sessions Vol. 2

Recorded in May 2000, DC Sessions Vol. 2 is jammed packed with disco styled and deep house tracks.  However, I never distributed the mix to the house patrons of DC.  So after 10 years, here it is!  "Bushes" by Markus Nikolai starts the mix and was made famous by the San Francisco Sessions mix by Mark Farina.  It has a very cool almost eery vocal throughout.  "It's Love" by Naked Music NYC is pretty much an anthem track in my opinion.  I think that about 100% of the time when I hear it, I have to sing along.  With a deeper more tribal sound, "True House" by C&M Productions was a regular hit from coast to coast.  I can remember listening to Saeed playing it many times at the club Red in DC during his Thursday night residency.  At first glance, you may expect a certain type of track when you see "Baby Love" by Cassio in the tracklist.  However, DJ Q (Paul Flynn) definitely changes things up with a whole new take on the track. DJ Q is one of my favorite producers.  I first heard the Disko Method track on a mixed CD by DJ Michelle (Canada) I received from her at the Winter Music Conference in 2000.  Disko Method is an alias for Eddie Matos of the famed duo Mateo and Matos.  Great track I must say with an unmistakable piano loop.  Finally, I think the "Keep It Together" track by Lexicon was really slept on.  I never really heard it played out in the club scene but still today love the track.

Niv :: Evolving Soul

This mix spun by Niv Farahandouz or as all of us knew him "Niv".  Unfortunately, our brother is no longer with us, but I felt since it's been 10 years since he put this together it would be nice to revisit his amazing skills as a DJ.  When Niv originally gave me this mix, it was for me to put up on our brand new website District Soul.  We were just starting the website as a local resource for house music and the underground scene in DC.  Thanks to him and many other very talented local DJs, the site took off and became the online social resource of DC long before sites like Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, Twitter, etc.  The track selection on this mix is impecable.  The Carnaval de São Vicente by Cesária Évora song blew me away the first time I heard it.  In fact, I was in my office at the time and had to stop what I was doing just to call Niv and ask him what that track was.  Cada Vez by Negrocan was on regular rotation at Red.  This was also the era when Naked Music tracks were extremely in vogue.  Solar House's Got 2 B U was an underground hit as well.  Finally, the mix ends on one of the all classics, Love & Happiness by River Ocean featuring one of my favorite singers, India.  Here's to Niv, rest in peace my friend.

Avery :: Tere 54

This mix is dedicated to a special someone named Tere who loved the days of disco.  We step into the way back machine to revisit some of the tracks the rocked the club scene 30 years ago.  This is the music that house stemmed from...so in terms of a history lesson, it's time to start studying.  I selected some obscure edits of some popular tracks to put a new twist on some real classics.  Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Avery :: The Definition Of...

Here's another mix from the archives recorded February 1, 2001.  It was my first time encountering Gotan Project.  Tríptico was the first track off of a compilation I purchased on Compost Records named Glüklich IV.  Since then, I've been really impressed with the various releases and remixes by Gotan Project.  It was also the first time I purchased a track by Zero dB.  Click is a bouncy, jazzy, sort of warped, fun track.  It was one of those types of songs that I used to use to transition from one mood to another.  If I was playing deeper and decided I needed to get things more upbeat, Click was the track to do it.  The most fun I had making this mix was towards the end when I layered a track from the Bang The Drum EP with the Jacob's Ladder track and then played with bring each track in and out.  The mix ends with a track that really put my friends T-Kolai on the map: Exodus.  Taha and Nicolas were really starting to hit their groove back in 2000.  I really cherish those days when I used to spin along side them at Club Andalu in DC.

Avery :: Diamond Sutra

I really enjoyed making this mix on March 3, 2001.  The sad part is now that I've listened to it again, my memory is failing me with the majority of the tracks.  Currently, I'm living in Brasil but the majority of my collection is back in the US.  When I listened to the mix, I could picture almost every one of the record's label and/or cover but no titles.  Excuses, right?  Oh well... it's still a good listen.  Enjoy.

Masters At Work :: Boxed 95

This is a live recording of one of the best house duos in the world Masters at Work.  Recorded in 1995, "Little Louie" Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez do their magic on 4 turntables.  After listening to the mix a couple times, I absolutely love it.  What sets it apart and gives it that true LIVE party experience is that they are really working the decks and mixers.  It's not your prototypical studio mix that just blends one song after another--- YAWN.  Instead, you can transport yourself to the party with the mental image of house goodness this mix paints.  I will not run down every track on the tracklist because they were almost all absolute HITS.  Anybody who's new to house music needs to get out the pen and paper and take notes-- not just for every one of these songs but how they are played.  School is in session and MAW are the professors.

LBS :: Winter Fönk

I decided to revisit this mix by my partner in crime LBS.  He recorded it in December 2000 with his trademarked deep jazzy sound that he always provided us.   The main reason for re-posting the mix (you can find the original post here) is because I was able to put together the missing tracklist.  There are several gems on this mix.  One of my favs is the Soldiers of Twilight "Feeling So High".  There's two good mixes on the single.  Little Louie's "Life Goes On" is still a hit today.  That track blew up in NYC and spread like wildfire across the globe.  True to LBS' stylings, we get blessed with the dub version on this mix.   The hypnotic trumpet in "Trumpet Jam" by Encounters gets me every time.  I had the single in regular rotation at my gigs.  So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I encourage each one of you to listen to this mix and if you already did... do it again!  It's one not to be forgotten.

Avery :: Juegos Que Jugamos

This is a throwback mix to the early 90s Funky Breaks that was spreading around the nation from people like DJ Icee aka Icey, DJ Dan, Scott Henry, etc.  There's plenty of classic tracks.  I recorded it in 2003 but most of the tracks are from 1991-1995.  One of my favorites has to be DJ Mink "Can You Relate".  It was actually a fast hip-hop track but most DJs played the instrumental.  The Bassbin Twins were quite a staple at the time, too.  You couldn't go out to a party without hearing one of their tracks.  A funny side note is that the "Twins" are actually just one person - Peter Houser.  Another interesting fact, is that the Song to the Siren was by Dust Brothers before they were forced to change their name to the Chemical Brothers due to copyright issues with another set of Dust Brothers who helped produce Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique album.

Avery :: Transient Soul

This installment of the bonus mixes brings us Transient Soul not Windy Vibes.  As it turns out, I had my archives mislabeled and sadly, Windy Vibes is missing in action.  The good news is I located all the track names for Transient Soul.

On this mix, there are several nice tracks to be heard.  The Africanism track was a serious hit when I recorded this mix in July of 2000.  I played it on a regular basis in DC.  The Latina Café (aka Osunlade) was almost as popular.  The Garage Pusher (aka Greg Cash) track is on a label from Chicago I particularly liked at the time called Bumpin City.

Avery :: Unconscious Therapy

Recorded June 20, 2000, this mix has a variety of house releases from that year.  Of the tracks selected, I particularly the opening "So Flute" track by St Germain.  It is the same flute that you hear playing in the movie Snatch.  One of my personal favorites and one that used to be a staple of my sets that year is "We Look For Love" by Tony Senghore & Martin Venetjoki on Panhandle Records.  I think many people slept on that Forward Movement Part 2 EP.  Phlash (aka Phil Asher) - "Participate" is quite amazing, too.  The first time I heard it out, I was blown away.  It just keeps building and building.  There's something about Marcus Begg's singing style as well that I love.  I only wish he sung on more tracks.  Finally, Todd Gardner's "Do You Know House?" became quite the anthem everywhere.  I think it's a great tune but I've always thought that there should have been a version without the guitar going wild towards the middle to end.  When I made this mix, it was one of the first times I became acquainted with the musical stylings of LHK.  He hails from Manchester, England but I swear whenever I would pick up his records, it felt like he was from Chicago.  He's a very talented yet underrated producer.  Definitely take a look at his work.

Armand Van Helden :: Rise Vol. 1

This mix is courtesy of Redlight Music.  Thanks to them we can listen to Armand back when he was playing deep quintessential early 90s house.  If you are interested in the back story check the article.  After listening to this mix the first time, it took me back to the times in DC when we used to go out to Tracks, Fifth Column, Serve (at Buzz), The Vault and ventured up to The Paradox in Baltimore.  These were the tunes that I used to record off radio from shows in Baltimore from radio stations 92.3 and 102.  Off the top of my head, DJ Spen, Mark Allen, Jerome Hicks, Ivan G, Ed Bailey, and 95 North come to mind... Come to think of it, there's too many DJs to remember.

Rather than me ramble on about how I love almost every track on this mix, just take a listen yourself.  If you have the time and want to know more, I'd suggest looking up some of these songs and artists on Discogs.  You owe it to yourself.

Avery :: Windy Vibes

As it turns out, Windy Vibes is missing in action.  The mix uploaded was actually Transient Soul recorded in July 2000.

If anyone who has copies of my old demo CDs I used to give out and has a copy of Windy Vibes, I'd be greatly appreciative if you let me know.

Garth :: Eze Skankin (Side B)

Here's side B of this 1992 mix from DJ Garth.  It starts out a little deeper and smoother than side A.  Overall, it's definitely a cover-to-cover mix that has gotten plenty of global notoriety.  For all you old school heads out there, you'll enjoy the walk down memory lane it brings.  If you are unfamiliar/new to this style music, the Eze Skankin mix gives you a clear picture of the tunes that were moving dance floors across the U.S. in the early 90s.

Here's an old mix from DJ Garth.  It was recorded in 1992 and has several great tracks that have lasted the test of time.  One of the most famous has to be the Phuture "We Are Phuture".  I also dig the One Dove "Transient Truth" track.  I only wish back at this time I had a chance to check out the underground San Francisco scene that was really starting to blow up.
