Part 8 of the Free Form series is quite a bit shorter than the rest but jammed packed with great tracks. It starts off very chill and relaxed with some lounge tracks but then quickly picks up the pace with some jamming deep house. He wraps up the mix with some more lounge tracks for 42 minutes of Johnson Lee magic.
This edition of the guest mixes brings us one of my favorite producer/djs: Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann. I've been collecting this man's music since 1995 and I have yet to be disappointed. His mysterious hypnotic style of production with a signature Detroit sound is unique and unmistakable. I could go on and one about how much I really love his music but instead I want to share this mix from 1995 when he played live at Radio Nova in Paris. From beginning to end it is pure KDJ goodness. For those that aren't very familiar with him, sit back relax and prepare to be blown away. For the rest of us, it's time to enjoy what we know is coming.

Side B of this mix starts off with some lounge, it progresses into a DnB vibe, and then moves back to house. After listening to this again, this side sounds like the precursor to the Free Form series he started only a year later.
As I've been digging through my old cassettes, I've been running into some great mixes of late. This mix I'm brining you is the very first mix I ever received of Johnson Lee. He recorded this back in 1999. Let me tell you, true to the title it is definitely BANGIN! I don't have a playlist but I can attest that this mix just doesn't stop coming at you. When I first got it from Johnson, I used to have it on heavy rotation in my car. In fact many times when LBS and I were headed downtown, this would be the mix to get us ready for the night.
Here's side B of the Chamber Of Sound mix I dusted off from my old collection of tapes. Like I was saying on A side of this mix, I don't know who mixed each side. This side had more tracks that weren't as mainstream in the underground circuit. The mixing is not as smooth/tight but it's still a very good listen especially for those looking to take a trip in the 'Way Back Machine'.
I didn't have as much success putting together the playlist. If anyone can assist, I'd be greatly appreciative.

Here's a blast from the past mix that I ran across when dusting off my old mixtapes. It was recorded December 1993 by Saeed & Palash. I'm not quite sure who mixed each side. However, it's jam packed with great tunes from the time. This tape is especially memorable for me. I believe I got it from LBS, who got it from our friend Nam L. That's the way it went back then. We had copies of copies and with each copy the hiss was even stronger. I tried cleaning up this recording in the studio. Anyhow, back in 1994 I had my first radio show at St. Mary's College. I used to play tracks from this mixtape on almost every show. It was quite interesting trying to mix from a mixtape to CD to vinyl and back again all on a radio studio mixerboard. Incidentally, I don't know what the original name of the mix but what I had heard was Saeed and Palash had a residency of sorts at an old underground club in DC called the Chamber of Sound (925 5th St. NW).
As for the tracks, I did the best I could from memory. Feel free to comment on any missing info for artists and track names. Rather than me run through all the anthem tracks on this mix, I'll just say that if you were going out to the club scene in 93/94, you would have been rocking to these songs over and over. Ahh... the memories.

This is a live recording from a set I did at 88.1FM WMUC "The Battery". It had been about 3 years since my last radio show at the station and I was asked to come do a guest set by host Mike Fiorita. Around this time I had been experimenting in my sets by mixing it up with all kinds of genres instead of the straight forward house or lounge set. I started this mix with some funk, moved on to some jazzy lounge, worked my way into deep house, then to some broken beat, and finally ended with some jazz. Anyhow, the quality of the archive isn't as nice as I'd like but it'll have to do.
